Over the next several decades, the hotel experienced numerous name changes until 1979 when it became what it’s known as today, the Scandia House. In 1990 the hotel was purchased by George & Nancy Murrison. Over the past 30 years, the Scandia House has been proudly run as a family operated business with the goal of providing comfortable and affordable accommodation for travelers from all over the world. In December of 1994, the hotel was destroyed by fire. Although devastated, owners George & Nancy decided to rebuild the Scandia House in order to maintain the hotels tradition that had been going strong for almost a century. The following summer, the newly built Scandia House reopened to travelers once again. Today, although George has since passed on, Nancy will soon retire and pass the family business down to her son, Chris Oppenheim, so that he may continue the tradition of offering the attentive hospitality of a family run business.
Petersburg is affectionately known as “Little Norway” and the Scandia House has always aimed to capture the Norwegian charm and hospitality that our guests deserve. We are situated in the heart of several Alaskan adventures which include fishing, sightseeing, hiking, photography opportunities, hunting & more. We can recommend amazing whale watching, LeConte glacier and helicopter tours available from local operators we know well. Our hotel is conveniently located downtown within a block of the harbor and many unique local shops and places to eat. Our hotel accommodations are perfect for family groups, friends, business or simply a relaxing getaway. Many of our guests are largely repeat customers who recommend Scandia House to family and friends.
While our goal is to offer comfort and affordability, we also strive to provide exceptionally clean comfortable rooms, and we’re constantly working to update our property for guest comfort and safety as we are a fully fire protected facility. We also keep our environment in mind whenever possible by providing quality guest services which include recycling and using environmentally friendly products.
