Explore Alaska’s Three Lakes Trail in Tongass Forest

The Three Lakes Trail in Petersburg, Alaska, is a fantastic outdoor adventure spot in the Tongass National Forest. This trail takes you through beautiful forests, peaceful lakes, and plenty of wildlife. It’s a great place to hike, explore, and even go fishing!

The trail is about 4.5 miles long and shaped like an “E,” with paths leading to three lakes: Sand Lake, Hill Lake, and Crane Lake. You can visit just one lake or all three. Wooden boardwalks cover much of the trail, making it easy to walk on even when it’s rainy. Some parts are a little steep, adding a fun challenge!

Along the way, you might see moose, black bears (especially in summer), and beavers building their homes. If lucky, you could spot sandhill cranes flying by during their migrations. The lakes are full of trout, so they’re great for fishing. Rowboats are available for anyone who wants to paddle across the water and enjoy the scenery.

If you need a break, there’s a shelter near the middle lake where you can rest or even spend the night. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a snack and admire the peaceful surroundings.

Getting there is easy. Just drive south from Petersburg on the Mitkof Highway until you reach Three Lakes Loop Road. The trailheads are about 15 miles from the north end of the road and 6 miles from the south end. If you’re up for an extra adventure, you can hike from Frederick Sound using the Ideal Cove Trail.

Before heading out, remember to stay safe! Make noise while hiking so you don’t surprise any animals, and carry bear spray just in case. The weather can change, so wear layers and take a rain jacket. Pack plenty of water and snacks since there are no restrooms or water fountains. Bring a sleeping bag and other camping supplies if you plan to stay overnight.

The Three Lakes Trail is perfect for hiking, spotting wildlife, and enjoying nature. Whether fishing, paddling, or just exploring the forest, it’s a fantastic way to experience the outdoors!
